Index Card Sizes: 3x5 vs. 4x6 vs. 5x7 (and Which to Use)
Share
Index cards come in a few standard sizes, and the right one depends on how much you need to write and how you will use the card. Here is a quick comparison.
3 x 5 inches: the classic
The 3x5 is the original index card size. It is compact, easy to carry and perfect for short flash card prompts, quick notes and small recipes. If you like to shuffle through a stack in your hand, this is the one.
4 x 6 inches: more room to write
The 4x6 gives you noticeably more writing space without becoming bulky. It works well for recipe cards, longer study notes, speech cues and organizing projects.
5 x 7 inches: the big one
The 5x7 is best when you need extra space, such as detailed recipes, presentation notes and larger labels. It also doubles as a small card for invitations and thank-you notes.
Which size should you choose?
- Flash cards: 3x5 for short prompts, 4x6 when answers run longer.
- Recipes: 4x6 is the most popular, with 5x7 for detailed recipes.
- Speeches and presentations: 4x6 or 5x7 for larger, easier-to-read notes.
- Classroom and office organization: 3x5 or 4x6 for labels, sign-in cards and task cards.

Why weight matters
Thin index cards bend and tear with frequent handling. Heavyweight 110lb cardstock stands up to repeated shuffling, kitchen use and being passed around a classroom, and it takes pens and markers well.
